Eye Exams

What is a comprehensive eye exam?

A comprehensive eye examination includes the evaluation of the eye for any vision or ocular health issues. This examination includes a refraction, tonometry (eye pressure), and pupil dilation. We recommend having a comprehensive eye exam on a yearly basis whether you have medical eye problems or not. Be sure to bring a designated driver for dilated eye exams.

Why are eye exams important?

Routine comprehensive eye exams for adults and children help detect vision problems, eye disease, and general health problems before you are even aware of them.

How long does the exam last?

A comprehensive eye exam can take anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour, so plan accordingly.

What is tonometry?

Tonometry is the procedure eye care professionals perform to determine the intraocular pressure (IOP) within the eye. We perform “applanation” tonometry, a more patient-friendly technique that requires no puff of air. This procedure is especially useful in diagnosing and monitoring glaucoma patients.

What is pupil dilation?

Our doctors use medical eye drops to dilate the eye. This increases the size of your pupil allowing our team to clearly exam the back of your eye. We recommend you have your eyes dilated every 1 to 2 years to screen and evaluate for retinal diseases and disorders such as:
  • Diabetic retinopathy
  • Hypertensive retinopathy
  • Retinal holes or tears
  • Retinal detachment
  • Retinitis pigmentosa
  • Cataracts
  • Glaucoma
  • Optic neuropathy
  • Macular degeneration
Our doctors use medical eye drops to dilate the eye. Dilation usually lasts around 4 to 6 hours.

If you have recently sustained an injury or have experienced flashes, floaters, or a sudden loss of vision, see an eye care specialist as soon as possible for a dilated eye examination.
