Dr. Smetana has been voted multiple years (including each of the past 3 years) one of Colorado Spring's Top Ophthalmologists by his physician peers in the El Paso County Medical Society.
A native of Western Kansas, Dr. Smetana graduated with highest distinction in undergraduate and medical school at the University of Kansas. After completing an internship at Presbyterian/St. Luke's in Denver, he completed his 3-year ophthalmology training at the Anheuser-Busch Eye Institute at St. Louis University. He was chosen most outstanding resident and chief resident during his final year in St. Louis.
Dr. Smetana has been board certified and practiced in Colorado Springs since 2004. He also travels to a monthly satellite in Buena Vista. His surgical experience includes laser cataract surgery and oculoplastic surgery. He also performs comprehensive and medical eye exams.
Scott and his wife Penny, who is a local Anesthesiologist, have loved calling Colorado Springs home since 2004. They have two very active and adventurous children. He is active with the local medical community and is a member of First Presbyterian Church and the AdAmAn hiking club. He is also an avid Broncos and Kansas Jayhawks fan.

I was greeted politely and was efficiently checked in. The assistant who checked my vision and eye pressure was efficient. Dr Smetana listened and gave me options. I chose for him to take care of the bump on my eyelid, he let me know there would be very little pain as he auctioned out the fluid and oil/wax. He let me know the bump would likely not return since he had also removed an ingrown eyelash where the bump had been.

My husband had cataracts in both eyes. We saw a doctor in NM who told my husband how difficult one eye was going to be and that it might take 2 surgeries to fix just the one eye. It was also going to take 4 months to even get a surgery date. They only talked about the one eye and said he would need another referral back to them for the second eye!
I found Dr. Smetana in Colorado. His office was so happy to make an appointment for my husband. We were able to get him in in just a few weeks. When he saw him, he looked at both eyes. Told us that the one eye was a doozy & he couldn’t wait to fix it for him! Both of my husband’s surgeries were scheduled for him as we left the office! The first was only 10 days out and the second a week after.
Dr. Smetana was not only knowledgeable, but funny & kind & put us both at ease. We knew he was going to do a wonderful job.
Every staff member at Eye Associates of Colorado Springs was friendly & knowledgeable & really seemed to love their job. There wasn’t a doubt in our minds that we made the right choice & that he was going to be in excellent hands.
Both surgeries have now been completed. He sees better than he has in almost a decade!! We are so impressed & so happy with the entire experience.

Dr. Smetana and his assistants took the time and made the effort to be more informative than any doctor in my past . Over the past several years I have lost most of my confidence in the American healthcare system but Dr. .Smetana has done much to restore that. This was my second visit with Dr. Smetana and I continue to believe I've found another "winner!" After he examined me, he took the time to sit and talk to me about some common interests we have. Primarily sports ( University of Kansas) and music. The musical portion touched upon the composer Bedrich Smetana who is a distant relative of the doctor. Having played some of the composer's music, I have great appreciation of two of his compositions, "The Moldau," and "The Bartered Bride."
